This organization taught students how to be professional artists after college graduation. During my presidency, I scheduled bi-weekly meetings to discuss the various aspects of professional artistry and over the course of two years, the group grew from three members to over 75. During my administration, the council put on three professional exhibitions, two print sales, and frequent meetings, all of which I worked to organize and coordinate

The use of new social media was essential to The Utah Photographic Arts Council. My responsibilities included creating and managing multiple mailing lists to communicate with students and faculty and to announce shows to the community. I designed the original UPAC website (Utah-pac.com, not shown), and created two different business card designs. I also managed a blog and Facebook account for the Utah Photographic Arts Council to promote exhibitions, meetings, and classes.

Equinox, Spring 2008

Equinox was the first exhibition of The Utah Photographic Arts Council. Held at Gallery UAF, in the spring of 2008, it showcased 9 artists, and had a very successful opening night. UPAC secured a professional space to exhibit without the aid of University of Utah leadership due to promotion of the group by officers and group members. The success of this show justified funding proposals for the following year. The Utah Photographic Arts Council was awarded $450 in 2007 from the University of Utah. During my presidency in 2008, The group received over $2000.

Mirrors and Windows, Fall 2008

Mirrors and Windows was the second exhibition of the Utah Photographic Arts Council. Held in the Alvin Gittin’s Gallery, Mirrors and Windows displayed the work of 19 artists. My responsibilities included securing the gallery space and handling all public relations, including writing press releases, designing postcards, and utilizing new media. My presidency and I were also responsible for hanging and lighting the show, coordinating submission drop off and pick-up, and planning an opening night reception, including refreshments and entertainment. Mirrors and Windows was held in an on-campus gallery, where multiple professors took their students to show them how to properly display a show. I received positive feedback from these professors, as well as the Dean of The College of Fine Art and the Dean of the University of Utah.

Becoming the Machine , Spring 2009

Becoming the Machine was the final show I curated while at the University of Utah. Based on the quote by Sol Lewitt “The idea becomes the machine that makes the art,” students were encouraged to submit conceptual artwork that was created outside of the classroom. I selected a non-traditional setting (an abandoned warehouse) to reinforce the idea that art is not only meant for the gallery, but can be found anywhere. Submissions included projections, installations, and various alternative photographic processes. I was responsible for coordinating with students to find a location and acted as a liaison between students, the location, and the University of Utah. I was also responsible for all public relations, including press releases, media interviews and new media advertising. I also hung and lit the show, and coordinated an opening night reception including refreshments and performances. Becoming the Machine received positive reviews and received the largest turn out to UPAC shows so far, despite its remote location.

Get the flash player here: http://www.adobe.com/flashplayer

Student Advisory Council / Bldg 38

In 2009 I served as the Vice President of the Student Advisory Council at the University of Utah College of Fine Art. My duties included representing the student body in faculty meetings and reviewing and approving or denying tenure requests, writing and presenting funding proposals for various groups and events, and presenting the annual “Alternative Show.”
In 2008, The Alternative Show was called “Bldg 38” after the name of the location. This show traditionally focuses on non-traditional works, and encourages large scale pieces. I assisted in curating by creating the call for entry, coordinating students for pick up and drop off, and accompanying the juror of the show, Jill Dawsey (Former Asst. Curator of SFMOMA). Bldg 0038 was open to all matriculated students at the University of Utah and presented a wide variety of mediums and styles.

Senior Show 2008

In 2008 I coordinated the Senior Show for the graduating class of 2009 at the request of the University of Utah faculty. Held at the Gallery of Contemporary Art and Design, the Senior Show consisted of work spanning all mediums offered at the University of Utah. By coordinating with the University, students and the gallery, I organized the printing and distributing of all postcards and posters, drafted contracts for submissions, and handled all public relations surrounding the event. I was also responsible for locating and coordinating with the juror Donna Poulton (Asst Curator UMFA).

Senior Show 2009

Having previously organized the 2008 Senior Show, I acted as a mentor to the organizers of the 2009 Senior Show. The vice president of the UPAC undertook the responsibility for 2009. As the Student Advisory Council Vice President I was responsible for writing and presenting the funding proposal for this event. My responsibilities also included writing the press release. Juried by David Bagley, I was awarded “Best in Show” for my submission Untitled, Yellow and Red (16x20 Ilfochrome print).
